SUNY Adirondack's Center for Student Success (Advising) provides academic advising to help students reach their educational goals. We are here when you need information about classes, majors and careers.

Student Success

Academic advisors help you select courses, stay on track to earn a degree and work toward your career goals. Student Success advisors are available throughout the year.

Students enrolled in degree and certificate programs are assigned an advisor from that department. Before you register for classes, we suggest you check with your advisor to make sure the classes you choose are what you need to complete a degree on time.

Advisors assist you with:

  • academic planning
  • career planning
  • transfer planning
  • course selection
  • degree management
  • establishing career goals

Our office coordinates the matriculation process (declaring a major), Early Alert, Academic Alert, Midterm Outreach, and advising technologies, communications and training.

We are the primary student resource for Priority Registration, Change of Major, Withdrawal from a class and Add/Drop.

 

 

About advising

The goals of advising are to:

  • Encourage your academic, career and transfer planning through an inclusive and supportive environment;
  • Provide you with accurate information and resources so you can navigate matriculation and your college experience appropriately with the ultimate goal of a college degree;
  • Promote personal responsibility in guiding you to achieve their goals, understand the relevance of higher education and value academic success;
  • Use technology and mutually respectful personal relationships to assist you with appropriate educational planning;
  • Foster continuous improvement through advisor education, evaluation of your needs and program assessment

At SUNY Adirondack, all full-time enrolled students are assigned an academic advisor based on your major. This advisor serves as a guide to educational and career planning, and a resource in your pathway to success at SUNY Adirondack.

Students can view their advisor's name in Degree Works or in Self-Service Banner.

Students can take advantage of advising services in the Center for Student Success in Warren Hall, as well as other opportunities on both main campus and Saratoga Center.

After being accepted to SUNY Adirondack, students will receive an email directing them to sign up for placement testing in math, reading comprehension and writing.

If you're considering moving on to earn a bachelor's degree (or beyond), our advisors can help you plan ahead to align credits earned at SUNY Adirondack with your longer-term goals. We also have articulation and transfer agreements in place with colleges throughout the Northeast, to further facilitate your transfer.

Career advising

Career advising is essential to the mission of the College Access and Student Success offices. Early career exploration can help you choose the right courses and, ultimately, the most appropriate degree or certification program to reach your goals.

Having a clear goal is helpful to staying motivated and recognizing how skills learned in the classroom will be applied in the workplace makes the learning much more relevant. 

Even students who are figuring out their career interests can be confident that many of the skills developed in their core first-year courses — critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication, among others — will help them attain and succeed at a wide range of future jobs. 

These are skills employers want, and we want to help students learn to articulate these skills effectively and develop a portfolio of tools and resources to support their career pursuits now and in the future.

College Access and Student Success provide a suite of career readiness services, including information on job search strategies, resume writing and interview skill building.

Career Readiness Services
SUNY Adirondack's Access and Success team has a significant pool of resources for coaching and developing talent. Our services are geared toward helping students see and reach their full potential through access to personal and professional growth opportunities, and the tools and resources necessary to become confident job-seekers.

  • One-on-one meetings: Meeting with an advisor is a good starting point for students beginning a job search. We will help you define your career goals, create a job search strategy, and develop or refine your resume based on your target audience. We can also help you create a LinkedIn profile, practice interviewing and learn impactful networking tips.
  • On-campus and off-campus employment opportunities: College Central Network is a free resource for all students and alumni, in which you connect directly with employers in the area who are hiring. In addition to hundreds of regional job postings (including jobs right here at SUNY Adirondack), you have access to Resume Builder, along with other career-related tools to help propel your job search to the next level.

Work study
Federal work study provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student's course of study. These positions are posted on College Central Network.
